POSTED July 31, 2012 12:49 p.m.

TOWN OF ARGYLE — A 57-year-old Argyle man drowned in the East Branch of the Pecatonica River north of Argyle Sunday night.

The body of Dale R. Jelinek was found Monday around 8 a.m. approximately one-fourth mile downstream from where an unattended kayak was found anchored one mile north of Argyle Sunday around 8 p.m.

The kayak was discovered with a paddle floating 300 yards from the kayak. The Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department and the Argyle Fire Department did a preliminary search Sunday night before darkness forced postponement of the search. Argyle police closed the boat landing.

Monday morning, the fire department and the Department of Natural Resources searched the river with boats and dragging equipment.

The drowning is under investigation by the sheriff’s department and the Lafayette County coroner. A sheriff’s department news release said “there does not appear to be any criminal activity associated with this death investigation.”
