Official enrollment up

It's official. The Platteville School District's official enrollment numbers were announced during the regular school board meeting Monday evening. According to Art Beaulieu, director of business and auxiliary services, the third Friday count shows an increase of three students compared to the official count last year. The preliminary enrollment numbers a couple weeks ago indicated a decrease of five students; however, the official number will be 1,460 students compared to 1,457 students last year.

Southwestern Schools hires new elementary/middle school principal

The resignation of Southwestern Elementary/Middle School principal, Carmen Burkum left a vacancy in the district with only two weeks until the beginning of school. At a special board meeting John Costello was hired to replace Burkum and officially began his duties with the district on Sept. 1.

Enrollment appears to be down slightly in the Riverdale School District, at least according to early numbers.

Platteville enrollment dips slightly

The unofficial enrollment numbers are in. During its regular meeting on Monday evening, the Platteville School Board was presented with the preliminary enrollment numbers by Connie Valenza, superintendent. The enrollment in the district is 1,466 full-time equivalent students, down from five students at this time last year. The official enrollment count is taken on the third Friday of the school year, which will be this Friday, Sept. 16. The number isn't expected to change drastically.

Still building character

Pep rallies, motivational speakers, posters, chants and high fives - all things you would see in a school in Grant County in the fall during football season. But in Potosi and Cassville the first day of school last week, none of those things had to do with any sports team or upcoming game - they were all part of the character education initiatives taking place to help students have a positive attitude, be considerate to their peers, and to continue to make the school a better place.

Teacher terminated over lapsed license

When in school, teachers often tell students that completing homework on time is a valuable lesson to learn and that there are consequences of a lower or failing grade for not doing so. For one teacher, a delay on getting his recertification has cost him his job as the Lancaster Community School District Board voted the night before the first day of school last Wednesday to terminate instrumental music teacher Rob Shepherd.

Students welcomed

Incoming University of Wisconsin-Platteville students were welcomed to the city on Friday. The Platteville Area Chamber of Commerce and UW-P held the annual New Student Welcome, which included a scavenger hunt at businesses in the downtown area.
