Governor declares state of emergency in Southwest Wisconsin counties

Gov. Scott Walker declared a state of emergency for six Southwest Wisconsin counties as a result of this week's torrential rains.

Shullsburg approves application for COPS Hiring Grant Application

SHULLSBURG - The Shullsburg City Council meeting Wednesday, July 5, 2017, was called to order. The council heard from Chief Josh Jerry regarding submitting an application for COPS Hiring Grant Application. The program, if awarded, will pay 75% (approximately $47,000) of the costs (wages and fringes) of a new full-time police officer with the city picking up the other 25% (approximately $16,000). It is a four year commitment with the fourth year the city is required to pay the entire cost of the officers wages and fringes.

Settlement reached between Town of Kendall, Darlington Community Fire Commission

DARLINGTON – The Darlington City Council approved a settlement agreement between the Town of Kendall and the Darlington Community Fire Commission for the amount of $9,290.

Multi-Use Facility unhappy with construction bids received

DARLINGTON – The Multi-Use Facility Committee met on Wednesday, June 21, 2017. The bids by the general contractors did not meet the expectations of the committee. Jack Sauer, chair of the County Board was expecting the numbers to be in the $500,00's; Tom Jean, Lafayette County Highway Commissioner, thought they would be in the $600,000's and Keith Dalsing, from KD Engineering, was projecting numbers in the $700,000's.

Highway Safety discusses ATV-UTV issues

The quarterly Highway Safety Committee met on June 15, 2017, a discussion regarding ATV-UTV routes began with Lafayette County Sheriff, Reg Gill talking about a recent ATV crash that involved a fatality. It was stated that speed and alcohol were factors in the accident. Gill said, "Unfortunately we have created this problem, connecting all of these routes and tying one bar to the next bar. Antennae approved for north water tower

DARLINGTON – A lease agreement between the city and ComElec was discussed. ComElec is proposing to use the north water tower to mount wireless internet equipment on top of the tower. The monthly rent the city would receive is $100 per month for year one and two; $150 per month for year three and $200 per month for year four and five. After year five the renewal rate would increase by an addition $25 per month, per annual renewal term.

Bids opened for Multi-Use Facility

DARLINGTON – Bids were opened at the Multi-Use Facility Committee meeting on Monday, June 12, 2017. The committee received five general contractor bids, two electrical bids, one HVAC bid and one general construction bid for a 248' x 80' partial cold storage and partial meeting room building.
