UW–Platteville held auditions for this summer's Heartland Festival Saturday afternoon. That is, UWP held auditions for children able to make it to the Center for the Arts for roles in "Shrek the Musical." Auditions for adults were postponed for Saturday from 3:30 to 6 p.m., and children entering fourth through eighth grades who were unable to make Saturday's original tryout can try out Saturday from 3 to 3:30 p.m. Organizers will contact adults on the audition list to reschedule a time for Saturday. Driftless Film Festival gets state grant

The Driftless Film Festival received a state Department of Tourism Joint Effort Marketing grant of $2,000. The festival seeks to enrich the movie-going experience by providing face-to-face interaction with filmmakers. The Independent films will be featured at the Mineral Point Opera House, Avalon Cinema in Platteville and the Gard Theater in Spring Green. This event brings filmmakers, directors, producer, actors, and film lovers together to entertain and educate about all things film. Goals include attracting 250 overnight guests, 500 day-trippers, and selling a total of 3,000 film tickets.

Library is ready with new books

There are some new titles of special interest at the Gays Mills Public Library. For the foodies out there the library has added three new titles. 'The New Midwestern Table: 200 Heartland Recipes' by Amy Thielen. The author grew up in rural northern of Minnesota eating the fare so familiar to most of us. She left the Midwest for New York City to hone her craft in the finer restaurants there. In 2008, she returned to the Midwest to rediscover the wealth and diversity of the midwestern table and to witness its reinvention.
