DARLINGTON – Amid all the hoopla and fanfare surrounding the 50th-year celebration of the Darlington wrestling program, the Darlington/Black Hawk turned in a busy week on the mats posting three wins in four dual meet matches and participating in the highly-competitive Badger State Invitational.
The WarBirds (, ranked fifth in Division 3) opened the week by defeating Dodgeville, 39-32, in a non-conference dual meet on the road on Tuesday, Dec. 19.
Then, on Friday, Dec. 22, Darlington High School held a reunion for all past wrestlers, coaches, managers and cheerleaders in conjunction with a non-conference quadrangular against Lancaster, Brookwood and Ithaca/Weston.
The WarBirds started off strong with wins over Brookwood, 43-26, and Ithaca/Weston, 36-31, to set up a championship match against Lancaster in the finale.
The Flying Arrows won 11 of the 14 weight classes with five pins and three major decisions to roll over the WarBirds, 54-15, to finish undefeated on the night. The WarBirds were second at 2-1.
Finally, Darlington/Black Hawk finished off the week by placing in a tie for 16th-place at the 25-team Badger State Invitational.
The WarBirds filled just nine of the 14 weight classes and had two fourth-place finishers on their way to a 16th-place finish with 54.5 points. Host Stoughton won the team title with 243 points.
Junior Kolbe Ubersox (14-2) went 3-2 in the 138-pound class and senior Brody Milz (14-2) went 3-2 in the 220-pound class to finish fourth for the WarBirds.
Senior Paul King (11-4) at 126 and senior Grady Rielly (10-4) at 152 each went 3-1 on the day in their classes.
The WarBirds return to the mats at the 2018 Lancaster Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 6, starting at 9 a.m.
