MINERAL POINT – Darlington senior Seth Johnson won his best ball match to help the Southwest Activities League (SWAL) defeat the Southwest Wisconsin Conference (SWC), 9-7, and reclaim possession of the Southwest Cup at the Dodge Point Country Club on Saturday, May 12.
Johnson teamed with Barneveld’s Ethan Harpold to defeat the River Valley duo of Luke Aron and Simon Ehlinger, 4&3, as the SWAL used a 3-1 advantage in best ball matches matches top the SWC in the ninth annual Southwest Cup competition– a Ryder Cup-like event pitting the top 24 golfers in each conference against one another.
The SWC still holds a 5-4 all-time series edge in the event.
The two conferences split the head-to-head singles matches, 4-4, and the best shot matches, 2-2, on the day. Lancaster’s Dillon Marshall downed Darlington senior Brogan Evenstad, 1 up, in singles play; while Dodgeville’s Eli Hardy and Lancaster’s Morgan Seippel topped the Redbird duo of sophomore Cody Crist and junior Cole Roelli, 5&4, in a best shot match.
The Redbirds had plenty of action on the course, finishing fifth with a score of 191 at the SWAL make-up match held at Fennimore’s Hickory Grove Country Club on Thursday, May 10; and then placing fourth with a team score of 197 at the Mineral Point SWAL Meet held on a windy and cold afternoon at Dodge Point Country Club on Friday, May 11.
Johnson led the Redbirds at each meet, firing a seven-over 42 at Fennimore on Thursday and an eight-over 44 at Dodge Point on Friday.
Evenstad finished right behind Johnson with a 43 on Thursday and a 46 on Friday. Crist carded a 51 and a 54, respectively, while Roelli tallied a 55 and a 54 for the ‘Birds.
Mineral Point won Thursday’s meet with a score of 165 and Friday’s meet with a 166 to wrap up a perfect regular season in SWAL play. Fennimore’s Cole Needham was the individual medalist at Hickory Grove with a two-over 37, while MP’s Dalton Collier and Simon Mitchell tied for top honors at Dodge Point along with Barneveld’s Owen Pechan with a four-over 40.
The 2018 WIAA Division 2 Regional Meet will be held at the Dodge Point Country Club on Tuesday, May 22, beginning at 9 a.m.
