FENNIMORE – Last Saturday’s second-place finish at the Golden Eagles Relays was a prime example of why the Lancaster varsity girls’ cross country team is ranked third in the latest Wisconsin Cross Country Coaches Association (WCCCA) Division 3 poll behind just Dodgeland and Auburndale.

The Lancaster ladies had a team time of 116:15 to finish second in the large-school team standings, finishing only behind Lake Mills by less than seven minutes.

Leading Lancaster with the second-best time of the 96 female runners was junior Lydia Murphy, who finished the 5,000-meter race in a time of 21:26.

Close behind her was Lancaster freshman Kristin Muench, who placed 10th with a time of 22:38.

Rounding out Lancaster’s top five were junior Hannah Cohen in 17th place (23:26), junior Crystalyn Mish in 25th (23:57) and senior Maddie Hampton in 41st (24:47).

The Lancaster boys finished fifth of seven teams in the large-school division with a combined time of 103:32, while West Salem took the top spot with a time of 98:04.

Sophomore Aaron Murphy led the Arrows with a 19th-place finish and a time of 19:39, while senior Tyler Graney placed 34th (20:07), senior Hunter Liddell 37th (20:17), freshman Hunter Moore 74th (21:31) and freshman Remington Bontreger 79th (21:55).

Also competing at the Fennimore meet were runners from River Ridge, where the boy’s placed eighth in the small school division and the girls seventh.

On the boys’ side, Brad Hoffman placed 22nd (19:45), Brett Kerscher 28th (19:59), Bryly Clark 81st (21:59), Sam White 89th (22:19) and Jon Breuer 99th (22:55).

For the River Ridge girls, Tova Lindberg placed 47th (25:04), Glenna Marshall 57th (25:35), Faith Webb 69th (26:37), Olivia Meyer 82nd (29:09) and Ashton Marshall 93rd (33:45).

* The Lancaster boys’ and girls’ cross country teams hosted Prairie du Chien on Tuesday, Sept. 12, in a dual meet, where the Lancaster boys finished ahead of the Blackhawks, 24-31, and the Lancaster ladies came in behind their opponents, 15-41.

Leading the Lancaster boys with a second-place finish and a time of 21:47 was freshman Remington Bontreger, while fellow freshman Hunter Moore finished third (22:06), freshman Zach Mendis fourth (22:22), junior Andrew McCarville fifth (22:58) and freshman Logan Smith 10th (27:09).

On the girls’ side, junior Lydia Murphy led the Flying Arrows with a sixth-place finish and a time of 24:29. She was followed by freshman Kristen Muench, who finished seventh (24:30), senior Maddie Hampton who finished eighth (24:31), junior Hannah Cohen who finished ninth (24:56) and junior Crystalyn Mish who placed 11th (26:07).

This Saturday the cross country teams will be in action at the Fennimore Invite, then will compete at the Platteville Invite next Saturday, Sept. 30.
