First-place Cardinals hold off cold-shooting Chieftains

POTOSI — With only four players scoring for the host Chieftains last Friday night, coach Mike Uppena’s squad suffered a 54–48 loss to visiting Highland in Six Rivers West conference boys’ basketball action.

JR Linscheid, Spencer Linscheid and Alex Michek scored 12 points apiece to lead the Cardinals’ (8–2, 4–0 SRW) balanced offense.

After JR Linscheid picked up his fourth foul midway through the second half, Highland went on a 12–0 run without its leading scorer to take a 44–35 lead with 5:03 remaining and never trailed again.

With the loss, Potosi fell to 3–2 in league action and sit fourth in the league standings, while the Cardinals remained unbeaten at 4–0 atop the conference standings with Shullsburg (4–0).

Coach Uppena’s Chieftains didn’t shoot particularly well from the field, making just 15 of 55 (27 percent) shot attempts, including 5 of 20 (25 percent) from 3-point range against Highland’s zone defense. Potosi was also just 3 of 8 (37.5 percent) from the free throw line compared to Highland, which made 14 of 20 (70 percent) charity tosses, including 8 of 10 in the final 1:56 to ice the victory.

Sophomore Brady Curtis led the Chieftains with 17 points to go along with four rebounds and one assist.
Junior Nic Spriggs finished with 12 points, six boards and three assists, while junior Alex Udelhofen chipped in 11 points and three steals.

Sophomore Will Bierman was the only other Chieftains to score, finishing with eight points, four assists and four of his team’s 10 steals.

Fellow sophomore Ethan Groom did not score, but pulled down a team-high seven rebounds to go along with two steals and two assists.

In non-conference action last Tuesday night, the Chieftains defeated visiting Albany, 76–63, shooting 61 percent (31 of 51) from the field, including 54 percent (7 of 13) from 3-point range.

Potosi had five players score in double figures with Spriggs leading the way with 19, followed by Curtis with 15. Bierman, Udelhofen and Groom all finished with 12.

Spriggs, Udelhofen, Groom and Nick Edge each pulled down five rebounds, while Bierman dished out a team-high nine assists and had three of his team’s eight steals.

This past Monday evening, the Chieftains made the trip to Warren (Ill), and came home with a 58–47 non-conference victory, improving their season record to 7–3.

Against Warren, Spriggs posted a team-high 17 points to go along with six rebounds, while Groom and Udelhofen each finished with 13 points. Groom also pulled down seen boards and had two steals, while Udelhofen had a team-high 10 rebounds.

Curtis dished out a team-high five assists, while Bierman had four to go along with six rebounds, three points and two steals.

This Thursday night, the Chieftains (7–3, 3–2) will host River Ridge (5–5, 3–1), then will travel to Lancaster (5–6) next Tuesday night for a non-conference contest.
