SOUTH WAYNE – River Ridge used a five-run rally in the fifth inning to slip by Black Hawk in the opening game of their Six Rivers’ crossover twinbill by a score of 7-4, and then used a pair of big innings in game two to earn a 13-5 win and the sweep over the host Warriors at BHHS on Friday, April 21.
Black Hawk dropped to 1-6 overall on the season and 0-5 in Six Rivers Conference play with the losses.
The Warriors trailed 2-0 early, but tied the game with a two-run rally in the bottom of the first inning and then grabbed a 3-2 lead with a run in the bottom of the fourth. Jason Treuthardt singled home Rece Shelton for the first run and Milz drove in Josh Meier with a sacrifice fly to deep left field to tie the game at two all in the first. Noah Metz singled in Michael Flanagan for the go-ahead run in the fourth.
The Timberwolves answered with five runs off Flanagan and reliever Preston Bevins in the top of the fifth to grab the lead back for good at 7-3. Bevins was tagged with the loss after giving up four unearned runs in the fifth.
Treuthhardt, who was 2-for-4 at the plate to lead the Warriors, added a run on an error in the seventh but it wasn’t enough as the Warriors fell in the conference clash.
The teams were knotted at 1-1 heading into the bottom of the third inning in game two when the Timberwolves struck for the go-ahead run to jump into the lead to stay. The ‘Wolves tallied six insurance runs in the fourth frame and tacked on five more in the fifth to run away for a 13-5 victory.
Meier scored twice and drove in a run for the Warriors in game two, while Milz recorded two RBI. Jeff Rufenacht went 2-for-4 at the plate, and Treuthardt hit a double for the hosts.
At Monticello, on Tuesday, April 18, the host Ponies broke open a tight game with a four-run rally in the bottom of the sixth inning and held on to post a 9-3 Six Rivers East decision over the Warriors for their first win of the season.
Treuthardt went 2-for-3 with a run scored for Black Hawk, while Milz doubled and scored a run in the game for the guests.
Black Hawk hosts Highland in a Six Rivers crossover doubleheader on Friday, April 28, starting at 4:30 p.m.; and the Warriors have SRE games at home against Pecatonica on Monday, May 1, and against Barneveld on Tuesday, May 2, both beginning at 5 p.m.
