Merits of moving sixth grade to jr./sr. high school debated

Meeting to gauge interest/support held

After sending out letters to parents of students who will be attending sixth grade this fall, the Boscobel School Board posted meeting notices online and at various locations in town last Friday for a meeting Monday night to discuss and solicit input from the public on the possibility of moving the sixth grade classrooms to the middle/high school building.

Around three-dozen community members were in attendance to hear District Administrator Greg Bell explain at the beginning of the meeting that while there had been some discussion with teachers and administrators, no planning to actually implement the proposed move had been undertaken.

“This is not a done deal,” Bell stressed. “The Board of Education has had no formal discussion of the topic.”

The feedback was somewhat mixed, with three messages coming out loud and clear: a move this fall was far too soon, sixth graders need to be kept well segregated from the high school, and the school district needs to address issues around bullying.
