Kordell Stillmunkes, Jr., Cuba City boys track and field

     Cuba City junior Kordell Stillmunkes won three SWAL titles and four regional titles in track and field last week to earn this week’s Mast Water Technology SWNews4U.com Athlete of the Week award. The speedy senior won the 100-meter (11.14) and 200-meter (22.89) dashes and was a member of the winning 4x100-meter relay team (45.90) at the SWAL Meet last Thursday where he helped the Cubans (102) finish third behind Darlington (198) and Fennimore (115). He then won titles in the 100 (11.24), 200 (23.14), long jump (20'5.75") and 400 relay (45.74) at the WIAA Division 3 Cuba City regionals, that was held Monday and Tuesday due to a weather suspension. 

     Stillmunkes will compete again today at the WIAA Division 3 Bangor Sectional with a chance to move on to next week’s WIAA State Championships that will be held June 2–3 at UW–La Crosse. The top for finishers in each event at sectionals moves on to state. 

 

 

HONORABLE MENTION (in alphabetical order):

Sami Brookens, Sr., F, Platteville/Lancaster girls soccer

     Brookens scored three goals (her second hat trick of the season) and assisted on a fourth goal to lead the Hillmen to a 5–0 Senior Night victory over visiting Richland Center on Tuesday afternoon. Brookens, who now has a team-high 17 goals on the season and 80 goals in her career, moved into third-place on the all-time Platteville/Lancaster goals scored list behind Brianna Murphy (137) and Caitlin Murphy (116). The Hillmen (9–6–3, 8–0–1 SWC) also clinched a share of a third straight conference title. The Platteville co-op can clinched the outright title with a win at Prairie du Chien this afternoon.

 

Josh Hentrich, Sr., Lancaster boys golf

     The Lancaster senior shot a 4-over-par 76 to finish second at Tuesday’s Southwest Wisconsin Conference meet at Reedsburg County Club. With his the second-place finish, Hentrich wrapped up the individual season-long points championship and SWC Player of the Year honors. He became the fourth Lancaster golfer in the past six seasons to win the league’s top honor, joining brother Zach Hentrich (2012, 2013) and Andrew Gates (2015).

 

Cade Rohrbach, So., Platteville boys golf

     The Platteville senior shot a season-low 3-over-par 75 to win the Southwest Wisconsin Conference Championship golf tournament Tuesday at the Reedsburg Country Club and in the process helped the Hillmen clinch the overall SWC title in dominating fashion. Platteville shot a 312 to finish 34 strokes better than runner-up River Valley (346) and dominated the final conference standings with the maximum 48 points, winning all six regular season meets and the conference tournament. Rohrbach finished third in the individual season-long standings behind Lancaster senior Josh Hentrich and River Valley senior Derek Wedige to earn first-team All-SWC honors.

 

Chris Trejo, Sr., P/3B, Shullsburg/Benton baseball

     Trejo won two starts on the mound and tossed four scoreless innings in a no-decision against Highland as Shullsburg/Benton locked up the Six Rivers West championship outright with a 5–0 finished last week. Trejo pitched 13 2/3 innings in three games allowing two runs on three hits with 18 strikeouts. He is now 8–1 on the season, while Shullsburg/Benton ended the regular season with 12 straight wins to finish with a 22–3 overall record and 14–1 in the Six Rivers Conference. The Miner/Zephyrs earned the second seed and a first-round bye in the upcoming WIAA D4 playoffs. They will face the winner of #3 Mineral Point and #6 Cuba City in a regional semifinal on Tuesday.

 

Brelynn Updike, Sr., Platteville track and field

     Updike won conference titles in the 800 (2:13.27), 1,600 (5:29.43) and the 4x400 relay (4:14.65) to help the Platteville girls’ track and field team win the team title at last Tuesday’s SWC Conference meet at Richland Center. Updike then finished second in the 1,600 and third in the 4x400 relay at the D2 Lancaster regional on Monday/Tuesday to advance to today’s WIAA Division 2 McFarland Sectional.
