GAME OF THE WEEK (May 1–7)

SWC SOFTBALL: Dodgeville 1, Platteville 0

PLATTEVILLE — Platteville’s six-game winning streak and co-hold on first-place in the Southwest Wisconsin Conference simultaneously vanished Friday in the most unimaginable way possible.

Junior Kaycie Wagner, last week's Mast Water Technology SWNews4U.com co-Athlete of the Week, threw her first career no-hitter, but it wasn’t enough as Dodgeville’s Lindsay Murphy and a second-inning Platteville error lifted the Dodgers to a 1–0 victory.

“Friday night’s game was a rough one to swallow, but there were some great things to take from it,” said Platteville head coach Becca Lowe. “The first is Kaycie’s no-hitter. She pitched an amazing game, it was just unfortunate we couldn’t score any runs. The second is that we now know what it takes when we have to face Dodgeville a second time. To lose 1–0 against the other 5–0 team in the conference is not a bad loss.”

Mortimer drew a two-out walk in the top of the second inning, then Olivia Argall attempted to surprise the Hillmen with a bunt.

Wagner fielded the bunt cleanly and had plenty of time, but her throw to first sailed high and wide of first baseman Allie Cooley down the right field line, allowing Mortimer to score all the way from first base on the play.

Dodgeville nearly added another run on the ensuing play, but Cooley recovered after a dropped throw from Wagner on JoJo Heimerl’s comebacker and picked up the loose ball just in time to record the final out of the inning.

The Dodgers threatened again in the third when White and Ellie Argall reached on walks, but Wagner struck out Murphy to end the half inning.

Murphy was nearly as dominant as Wagner throughout. The Dodgeville hurler allowed just four Hillmen hits in the game and struck out seven while walking only one.

Wagner had a two-out single in the first, and junior Amber Lancaster had a lead off double in the fourth, but both were stranded.

Platteville’s best chance to score game in the bottom of the sixth inning, when sophomore Josie Nies reached on a dropped fly ball to centerfield. She moved to third on a passed ball and after a pop out to

Murphy, Wagner walked.

Dodgeville allowed Wagner to steal second, putting a pair of runners in scoring position for Anica Graney, but on the third pitch of the at-bat the junior catcher hit a liner right at Dodgeville shortstop Ellie Argall and Wagner was doubled off second base to end the inning.

Junior Sami Martin singled to lead off the Platteville seventh and was bunted over to second by Mary Timmerman, but Murphy got junior Brea Moon to pop out to shortstop and struck out Cooley to end

the game.

Dodgeville (8–1) improved to 6–0 in the SWC and took over sole posession of first place. Platteville fell to 9–4, 5–1.

“I told the girls, now we know what it takes to beat them,” added Lowe. “We just have to go up to the plate with confidence knowing that we can get the job done. We had runners on in scoring position with less than two outs, the next time the meat of our line up, needs to be ready to hit something hard.”
