Platteville police look for hit-and-run, burglary suspect
Campbell

Platteville police are looking for a Hazel Green man who is believed to have attempted a burglary and was involved in a hit-and-run crash earlier today.

Jeffrey D. Campbell, 34, is white, 5-foot-7 and 165 pounds, with black hair and blue eyes.

Police were called to a Reddy Drive residence around 8:40 a.m. on a report that someone had tried to enter a house. A police officer tried to talk to the owner of a parked car in the area, but the driver sped off, according to police.

The car then hit an occupied vehicle at the intersection of Main Street and Elm Street, and the car continued until it became inoperable at Main Street and Washington Street, according to police.

Witnesses in the area of Main and Washington told police that the driver had fled on foot toward the northwest.

As a precaution, police asked Westview Elementary School to lock down earlier today. The lockdown ended one half-hour later, according to a Platteville School District email.

Based on property that Campbell abandoned, police believe he was in the process of committing burglaries.

Anyone with information on Campbell's whereabouts, or who has been a victim of a burglary or theft, is asked to call Platteville police, 348-2313.
