Cuba City community center project gets school go-ahead

CUBA CITY — Cuba City School District residents Aug. 21 voted 111–63 to sell 1.4 acres of land between Cuba City Elementary School and Cuba City High School to the City of Cuba City for $1.

“We don’t need a 1.4-acre section to continue to cut grass on,” said school board president Gary Andrews. “We would allow this group to at least try to build this building. If it isn’t successful, it wasn’t because we didn’t try.”

When asked if the land would be needed for future school expansion, Andrews said, “We’re going in the wrong direction to have that problem. We’ve got declining enrollment.”

The next step is a Cuba City referendum to raise taxes to fund the project, expected in November.

Construction is scheduled to take place between spring and early fall 2014.
