Hillsboro School Board works on collective bargaining
It approves a $798 pay increase for teachers, exchanges offers with support personnel

The Hillsboro School Board caught up on some important business, including work on the Collective Bargaining Agreements with the Hillsboro Education Association (HEA) and the Hillsboro Educational Support Personnel (HESP), at a special meeting Monday night.

The Board approved a $798 increase for HEA teachers, along with a one-time stipend of $35. It also approved 48 individual contracts for  professional staff/non supervisory.

The Board also exchanged offers with the HESP regarding 2013-14 wages.

Keeping the discussion and action on wage issues, the Board then approved salaries for head coaches and advisors in the following manner:

• $2,800 for Boys and Girls Basketball, and Wrestling;

• $2,650 for Football, Volleyball, and Cross Country;

• $2,300 for Baseball, Softball, and Track;

• $1,275 for Vocal Music Director.

The hiring of  new Elementary School Counselor Danah Tornga was also approved.

Kathy Redington was also hired as Special Education Route Driver.

The Board then approved the Second Reading of a revision in the Board Policy Book.

The Elementary School Student Handbook for the 2013-14 school year was also approved as prepared by Principal Cara Wood.

Hours of Instruction for the normal school day in the Hillsboro School District were adopted by the Board as follows:

• Grades 4K-3: 8:05 a.m. to 3:15 p.m.

• Grades 4 to 5: 8:05 a.m. to 3:20 p.m.

• Grades 6 to 12: 8:05 a.m. to 3:26 p.m.

Hours of Instruction on Fridays are as follows:

• Grades 4K to 3; 8:05 a.m. to 2:10 p.m.

• Grades 4 to 5: 8:05 a.m. to 2:10 p.m.

• Grades 6 to 12: 8:05 a.m. to 2:15 p.m.

The Board then approved revisions in the School Bullying policy regarding, among other subjects, retaliation against a complainant and false accusations.

The Board also approved an Exception Open Enrollment (in) request for one student from Wonewoc-Center, and Exception Open Enrollment (out) requests for three students (Richland Center, 1 and McFarland, 2).

After a Closed Session, the Board reconvened and approved a Family Leave Act (FMLA) request by teacher Emily Jirschele. The Board also approved an Unpaid Child Rearing Leave following the conclusion of FMLA and throughout the remainder of the 2013-14 school year.

It also approved the hiring of  Kellsie Goodman as a substitute for Jenny Barreau and Emily Jirschele.
