The bitter winter weather has had one particular effect — a nationwide drop in blood donations due to canceled blood drives and donors unable to get to blood drives because of winter weather.

There are five opportunities to make up the difference before the end of January.

The American Red Cross will hold a blood drive at Lutheran Church of Peace, 1345 N. Water St., Monday from 1 to 6 p.m. A blood drive at Platteville United Methodist Church Jan. 6 was canceled because of the below-zero weather. For more information, call 1-800-RED-CROSS.

The Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center will hold a blood drive at First English Lutheran Church, 215 W. Pine St., Monday, Jan. 27 from 3 to 6 p.m., and in the Southwest Health Center conference rooms, 1400 East Side Road, Friday, Jan. 31 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information, call 348-8655 or go to www.bloodcenterimpact.org.

A blood drive also will be held in the Livingston United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall, 415 Woodward Ave., Tuesday, Jan. 28 from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. For more information, call 943-6921 or 943-8455.

A blood drive also will be held in the Belmont Grade School Gym Friday, Jan. 31 from noon to 5:30 p.m. For more information, call 1-800-RED-CROSS.
