One of Wisconsin’s 250 farmers markets will open here for the 2014 season on Wednesday, May 14. The Gays Mills Farmers Market, now in its sixth year of operation, will again be located in the Lions Park shelter, off Main Street near the bridge. The hours each Wednesday are 2:30 to 6 p.m.

Local and area farmers will bring their seasonal fresh and organic vegetables and fruits, mushrooms, pure raw honey and honey products, and cheese and goat milk products. They’ll also have homemade jams, jellies, pickles and salsa, as well as flowers and bedding plants.

Hungry shoppers can find hot sandwiches and snacks, and there will be a changing variety of recipes for using the veggies and fruits available at the market. Farmer-vendors will be glad to share their gardening and food preparation tips. There will also be special events planned for the season, which can be found on the website Those events will include the ever popular Veggies on the Grill, a chance to taste dishes prepared using some of these recipes.

Again this year, shoppers can drop their names into the jar each week for a chance at the monthly $20 worth of free shopping. And, as always, the market welcomes Food Pantry (Crawford Markets Care) and WIC/FMNP customers.
