Platteville will host its fourth annual Make Music Day Friday, June 21.
Make Music Day is a day of music open to all businesses, parks, libraries, churches, coffee shops and wherever people feel like playing or listening. Platteville joins other events worldwide as communities come together in celebration of music and the countless benefits that making music brings.
Various businesses and organization have already registered to welcome performers, including UW–Platteville for The “M,” Driftless Market, the City of Platteville for its City Park Gazebo and the Mining and Rollo Jamison Museum, Platteville United Methodist Church, the Platteville Regional Chamber Katie’s Garden, Rountree Stone Cottage, Second and Main, Rountree Gallery, and the Platteville Senior Center.
The United Methodist Church will be host to several participation type events. At 11 a.m., the church will start with a hymn sing. You select the hymn and the organist/pianist will play. Classical musicians are invited to showcase their talents at an impromptu recital. Bring your instrument or voice and music to play for each other. All ages and abilities are encouraged to participate. Solo and ensemble events from this spring would be an excellent performance for this event. This recital will take place at noon in the beautiful United Methodist Church sanctuary. A Kawai grand piano will be provided.
Anyone wishing to learn how to play hand bells is invited to the United Methodist Church from 1 to 2:30 p.m. for a session on reading and playing hand bell music. No previous experience will be necessary.
This year (weather permitting) the World’s Largest M will be host to percussion sounds at 5 p.m. Participants of all ages are invited to bring their hand drum, sticks and bucket, cowbell, or even found sounds that create a percussive sound. There are 266 steps to be filled. Imagine playing “Telephone” only with percussion sounds. In addition, lessons in bucket drumming and hand drumming will be offered through leading authorities.
By establishing one specific day each year, June 21, to celebrate music, Platteville encourages both amateur and professional music making, and empowers individuals to seek out ways to celebrate music in their community. The Platteville Community Fund and West Music are proud sponsors of this yearly event.
