Jerry Mayne knew he wanted to go even bigger than last year.
It was last year, when he and his wife, Toni, were still in their old home on Monroe Street, that the couple had gotten a good deal on a dozen squirt guns - the big ones, not those little things - and gave those out to lucky guessing trick or treaters.
“We got a real good response,” Jerry said of last year.
Jerry got all the fun, as Toni was recovering from an illness, so Jerry decided he wanted to go even bigger this year.
“We just started buying throughout the year,” Jerry said before trick or treating started, a table in their garage packed with prizes for all ages.
And all ages indeed - they even had a pack of beer and wine for parents.
There were many things for different age groups. Barbie and My Little Pony, more squirt guns, coloring kits.
There is even a pinata filled with coins that children took whacks at, with all enjoying on the contents that fell out onto the garage floor.
“We just love the little ones just running around,” on why they decided to give away more than just candy.
Last year, the Maynes gave out the guns throughout the evening, but this year hthey decided to hold a drawing near the end of the night.
Sure enough, the garage got full with children and their parents after 6 p.m.
“The whole idea is fun,” Toni said. “Just to have a crowd of kids out here is fun.
“I wish the weather could have been a little better,” Toni continued.
Of course, they had a fire table going to keep everyone warm.
Meanwhile, back on the Mayne’s old street, Kelly Esser again filled her yard with numerous decorations.
With the weather report what it had been, Esser was afraid she wouldn’t be able to have a display this year, and when the windy flurries were blowing through the comunity early in the day, Esser thought it would be a no-go.
“I just ask for one day,” Kelly said of wanting good weather for Halloween. Fortunately, Mother Nature must have been listening as the weather got better, and a display could be done.
Esser has been decorating so extensively for years, and is never going to run out of ideas, it seems. She was already trying to plan out next year - all she has to do is convince her neighbors to allow her to set up a maze for trick or treaters to go through on the side of the house.
Meanwhile, over on Tyler Street, Tony Gundlach embraced the cold, deciding to have an ice fishing theme for the day, compelte with poles and a collapsible shanty.
