Tornado causes sewer line rupture, three months later

Platteville’s June 16 EF2 tornado appears to have caused damage to a sewer line nearly three months later.

The broken sewer line, on the north side of Business 151 west of Water Street and 30 feet up the hill, was detected Sept. 11.

Utility superintendent Irv Lupee said the sewer line was broken when trees were uprooted and knocked down as a result of the tornado. Though the line was inspected several times afterward, the pipe collapsed Sept. 11, partially blocking the flow.

The ruptured line, which was “very shallow,” emptied out into Rountree Branch. The line was repaired later that afternoon, about 30 minutes after the leak was detected, Lupee said.
