Platteville firefighters were called to a hog shed fire at 29770 Highway 81 in the Town of Elk Grove Sunday around 9:30 p.m. The barn was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived. A hog shed suffered heavy damage, and seven sows and 39 piglets inside the shed were killed. The Cuba City and Belmont fire departments sent tankers to assist at the fire. The Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department assisted at the scene. The Lafayette County Highway Department and the Town of Elk Grove assisted by salting roads nearing the fire scene. The cause of the fire is undetermined. Firefighters were at the scene almost 2½ hours.
