BOSCOBEL - A corrections officer at the Wisconsin Secure Program Facility (WSPF) in Boscobel was severely injured when he was assaulted by an inmate last Wednesday afternoon inside the prison.

Officer Jim Finnell was blindsided by inmate Demond Carter and knocked unconscious. Carter then proceeded to beat Finnell, inflicting lacerations, breaking several teeth and causing memory loss, bruising and swelling to the head and neck.

Finnell was taken to the Boscobel hospital and later transferred to Gundersen Lutheran in La Crosse. He is now recuperating at home.

Carter was sentenced to 10 years in prison in 2010 for sexual assault of a child. In 2017, he was sentenced to five additional years for an aggravated battery he committed at WSPF the previous year. He has yet to be formally charged in Grant County Circuit Court for this latest attack.
