Girl, 2, drowns in Mississippi

A 2-year-old girl from Waterloo, Iowa, drowned in the Mississippi River west-northwest of Potosi Saturday.

Bryle Morgan died early Sunday morning at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, where she had been airlifted by medical helicopter after the accident.

Morgan’s family was on the Mississippi on the Wisconsin side near McCartney and across from Waupeton, Iowa, Saturday around 5:05 p.m., when the Grant County sheriff’s 911 center received a call of a missing child on the river.

According to the Grant County Sheriff’s Office, Morgan’s family was on the island preparing for a group photo when the child and her mother went to a boat to retrieve an item.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, Morgan was wearing a life preserver, but it was removed before the photo was to be taken.

When the mother got out of the boat, she noticed Morgan was missing, and a search ensued, the Sheriff’s Office said. Morgan was found under a boat in the water, and was pulled out of the water, where resuscitation efforts began.

Morgan was taken by boat to the Waupeton boat landing, then transported by Sherrill, Iowa, ambulance to Mercy Medical Center in Dubuque. She was then taken by medical helicopter to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Dubuque County Sheriff’s Department and the Wisconsin and Iowa departments of natural resources.

The incident is still under investigation, but there is no initial indication of foul play, the Sheriff’s Office said.
