TOWN OF BELMONT — An 18-year-old Milwaukee man drowned at the Lake Joy Campground Saturday morning.

The body of Sidney L. Yera Jr. was found in the swimming area of the lake just before 11 a.m., about 90 minutes after family and friends saw him go under the water, according to the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office.

After the 911 call, which was received by the Iowa County Sheriff’s Office around 9:30 a.m., Belmont fire and EMS personnel began searching for Yera using boats on the scene. They were joined by the state Department of Natural Resources and the Grant County Dive Team, along with Lafayette County sheriff’s detectives with a boat and dragging equipment.

The incident is being investigated by the Sheriff’s Office and the Lafayette County coroner. Sheriff Reg Gill said in a news release that criminal activity is not suspected because the drowning was witnessed by family and friends.
