The average cost of a longboard: $200. The fine for riding it in the downtown area: $263.50.

Platteville police are reminding the public of two ordinances restricting skateboard and bicycle use downtown after several complaints and one car–skateboard crash.

Riding bicycles, skateboards, roller skates and inline skates on the sidewalk is illegal in the area bordered by Pine Street, Water Street, Furnace Street and Chestnut Street. Skate use is also illegal on city streets except while crossing a street at a crosswalk.

Police said complaints have increased in recent weeks about skateboards and bicycles on sidewalks downtown. A person on a skateboard was injured in a collision with a car on a street. The police will be increasing enforcement of those ordinances.

The full municipal code can be found on www.Platteville.org. Anyone with questions about the skateboarding or bicycle ordinances is encouraged to contact the Platteville Police Department at 608-348-2313.
