Two people were killed and one critically injured in a two-car accident on Highway 27 in Eastman Township Sunday afternoon.

The investigation and eyewitness account revealed the following of how the accident occurred.   A 2008 Chevy Impala driven by 19-year old Bridget A. Achenbach of rural Eastman was southbound on STH 27.  A 2013 Chevy Cruze driven by 85-year-old Kenneth H. Eppers of Tomah was northbound. The southbound Impala hydroplaned on the wet pavement and spun into the northbound lane.  The 2013 Cruze struck the Impala in the rear.

Achenbach was pronounced dead at the scene by the Crawford County Coroner.  Eppers and his 85-year-old wife, Genevieve M. Eppers, had to be extricated from their vehicle using the Jaws of Life.  Both were transported to Crossing Rivers Health Care where Kenneth Eppers later died from his injuries. Genevieve Eppers was transported to a hospital in La Crosse where she remains in critical condition.

The Wisconsin State Patrol was called to reconstruct the accident.  Highway 27 was closed for over three hours.

Assisting at the scene were the Eastman First responders and Fire Department, Seneca Fire Department, Bridgeport Fire department, Wisconsin State Patrol, Tri State Regional EMS, and Bobs Towing.  The Crawford County Highway Dept. assisted with closing the highway.
