A semi-tractor trailer driver suffered only minor injuries Feb. 20 after his rig  crashed into a pond at a Vernon County fish hatchery.

James Gobrecht, 64, of Belmont, Wis.,  climbed out of the sunken truck with help from firefighters and a deputy after the crash happened at about 6:40 p.m. along Hwy. 35 near Meadow Lane, the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

Gobrecht was southbound on Hwy. 35 when he lost control of his rig on the icy road. It overturned into the Genoa National Fish Hatchery pond.

“The truck was fully loaded and it took several hours for the wreckers to remove the tractor and trailer from the pond,” the release said.

Assisting at the scene was the Genoa Fire Department, Genoa First Responders, Tri-State Ambulance Service, and the Wisconsin State Patrol.

The accident remains under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office.
