Weather holds down deer kill

It was chilly, windy weather for opening weekend of the nine-day gun deer hunt, which may have had an impact on the hunt as locally, as results have been 20-30 percent lower that last year with 1,855 take registered in Crawford County.

Opening weekend typically accounts for 50 percent to 60 percent of the total gun deer harvest. The nine-day season runs through Dec. 1.

There were 1,437 more deer license sales this year compared to last for the season opener with 615,872 issued statewide.

Of those, 10-percent were to women, 13-percent to age 17 or younger, and 10-percent to age 65 or older.

Hunters harvested 368,314 deer in 2012 – 94,267 with bows and 274,047 with guns.
