Two rural Chaseburg men were injured Sept. 23 in a single vehicle versus horse-drawn buggy accident  in Jefferson township.

Samuel Mast, 21, and Ervin Miller, 30, both refused transport by Tri-State Ambulance to Vernon Memorial Healthcare in Viroqua and were transported by private vehicle to the hospital.

According to the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office in Viroqua, at approximately 7 a.m., Hayley Cade, 16, of rural Viroqua, was driving east on Co. KK, near Helgeson Road, when she struck the rear of the buggy in which Mast and Miller were riding.

Cade and her 13-year old passenger were wearing seat belts and were not injured. Both airbags in the Cade vehicle were deployed upon impact.

Both the automobile and the buggy sustained severe damage, and the horse received minor cuts.

Members of the Viroqua Fire Department and the Wisconsin State Patrol assisted at the scene.

The accident remains under investigation.
