Evelyn A. Edge, 95, of Davenport, Iowa, formerly of Lacon, Ill., passed away at Clarissa Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf, Iowa on April 1, 2017. Born on April 10, 1921 to the late Nathan and Lillian Bradley in Epworth, Iowa, she married Justin Edge on Aug. 25, 1941. Justin died Oct. 7, 2015. They were married for 74 years.
Evelyn is survived by her daughters Judy (Bill) Hawthorne of Davenport, Iowa; Becky (Bob) Hendrickson of Menomonie; son Curtis (Barb) Edge of Bradenton, Fla; grandchildren Kristen Schroeder, Amy (Mike) Saskowski, Erik (Kristi) Hendrickson, Brett Hawthorne; great grandchildren Bethany & Maia Schroeder, Emma, Abby, Justin, & Meg Saskowski, Makayla & Dominik Hendrickson, and several other relatives and her dear friends in the Lacon area and at Heritage Court. Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents and husband, were three brothers and two sisters.
She earned her two-year teacher’s certificate from the University of Dubuque and later her BS from Wisconsin State University-Platteville. For 27 years she was an elementary school teacher in Iowa, Wisconsin, and Illinois including several years in country schools where she was the only teacher for all the grades. In addition to her teaching responsibilities, she chopped wood, cleaned the school, carried water, made copies without a copy machine, and much more. Many of her former students from the various schools still kept in touch with her and told her she was their very favorite teacher.
After retirement, she volunteered at Hennepin, Ill. Attendance Center and Lacon Grade School. Other involvement included being a lifetime member of the National Education Association, member of the Illinois Education Association and the Marshall-Putnam Retired Teachers Association. She volunteered as a board member of the Marshall County Historical Society, Marshall County Home Extension Association, Red Cross Blood Mobile, Senior Health Insurance Program, a tutor for Literacy Volunteers of America, assisted with the local Food Pantry, worked 21 years on the Election Board, and served as treasurer for her church.
Services for Evelyn were held Saturday April 15 at Congregational United Church of Christ in Lacon Ill. with Ross Wyman officiating. Visitation was Friday, April 14 at Lenz Memorial Home in Lacon and one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial of her ashes will be at a later date in Citizens Cemetery, Scales Mound, Ill.
