Fred S. Stanek, 99 years young, passed away on March 17, 2015 at his home surrounded by his loving family.
He was born on Dec. 21, 1915 in Yuba, WI, the son of Anton and Josephine (Bulin) Stanek. When he was 9 years old, the family moved to the Town of Woodland, where he grew to adulthood and worked for Carnation Co. Fred enlisted in the Marine Corps in August of 1942 and was stationed in San Diego, CA at Camp Pendleton. He married Dorothy M. Liska on April 8, 1944 at St. Joseph’s Cathedral in San Diego. He was then stationed at Midway Island. He returned to Hillsboro and worked at Carnation Co., and then bought a farm in the Hillsboro area where he lived until his death. In addition to farming, he was an active member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council 4295, the VFW, Shaker-Callaway Post 8262; he was the Greenwood Township Clerk, and was the Treasurer for the Greenwood, Henrietta, Union Insurance Company. Fred cherished the time he spent with his family and was very involved in many school events with his children.
Fred is survived by his children: Tom (Kathy) Stanek, and Margo (Chuck) Price of Hillsboro; Judie (Bill) Bull of Englewood, FL; John (Shirley) Stanek of Melbourne, Australia; Pat (Dale) Strege of New Richmond, WI; Matt (Teresa) Stanek of Hillsboro; Barbara Stanek and friend, Steve, of North Freedom; Mark (Rose) Stanek of Elroy, Carol (Tom) Austin of Baraboo,Teresa (Manuel) Bahr of Mineral Point; 23 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren: Amber (Russ) Kaminsky [Alex and Olivia], Lisa Stanek (friend Bryant), Jana Price (Shawn Bleimehl) [Ally, Leah, and Sylvia], Nathan (Bethany) Walker [Lillian, Maria, and Aaron], Ryan (Catharine) Walker [Zoe and Forrest], Jeremy Stanek (fiance’ Emily), Samantha Stanek, Dana (Brock) Cooper, Amy (Tony) Fricano, Emily Stanek, Brandon Stanek, Gabriel (Sandi) Quinn [Maura], Joshua Quinn, Benjamin Quinn, Nicholas Quinn, Luke (Tracy) Stanek [Lydia], Kyle Stanek (fiance’ Ashley), Jordan Austin, Jacob Austin, Celsey Bahr, Jessica Bahr, Maggie Bahr, Clara Bahr; sister-in-law, Evelyn Liska; along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Fred was preceded in death by his loving wife, Dorothy, in 2001; his parents; sisters, Barbara (infant), Emma Lawry, Helen Stanek; brothers, Albert, Leo, Raymond, and Francis Stanek; half-sisters, Lucy Novy, Jenny Vanorak, Josephine Bruha; and half-brothers, Rudy and Martin Stanek; along with several brothers and sisters-in-law.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Fred S. Stanek was conducted at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 23, 2015 at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Hillsboro with Father Donald Bauer officiating. Burial will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, rural Hillsboro. Visitation was held on Sunday from 3-7 p.m. at the Thompson Funeral Home, Wonewoc, where a Knights of Columbus Rosary was prayed at 6:30 p.m. Visitation was also held on Monday morning from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the church.
