Herbert T. “Herb” Sosinsky, age 82, of Tomahawk, passed away on Monday, July 28, 2014, at his home under hospice care.

Herb was born Dec. 31, 1931, in Wonewoc, WI, to the late Alois and Cynthia (Eastman) Sosinsky.  He grew up in the Hillsboro, WI, area and was a 1949 graduate of Hillsboro High School.

Herb was married to Marvalene Urban on May 31, 1952; she survives.  He attended Vernon County Teacher’s College in 1955.  He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point in 1962.  He later received his Masters in Administration from the University of Wisconsin Superior in 1968.

Herb taught grades 7 and 8 at Soldiers Grove School in Vernon County from 1955 to 1957.  He and Marvalene then moved to the Tomahawk area in 1957.  He started at Bradley State Graded School, teaching grades 7 and 8 and serving as the school’s principal until 1963.  He then taught 8th grade math at Tomahawk Junior High School until 1965.  Herb became the principal of Tomahawk Elementary School in 1965 and kept that position until he retired in 1990.

He was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ in Tomahawk.  He served on the Tomahawk City Council and the Tomahawk Police and Fire Commission.  Herb was a member of the Tomahawk Lions Club and was a recipient of the Tomahawk Jaycees “Boss of the Year” Award.  He enjoyed fishing, golfing and gardening; especially taking care of his flowers.  He loved traveling and camping with his family.

Survivors include his wife, Marvalene Sosinsky, of Tomahawk; his son, Tom (Christine) Sosinsky, of Wausau; his daughter, Gail Wickman, of Madison, WI; five sisters, Helen Grant, of New Berlin, Jenny Helwig, of Holland, Michigan, Arlene Erie, of Fort Atkinson, WI, Patty Anderson, of Reedsburg, WI, and Rosemary Sinkule, of Kenosha, WI.

He is also survived by two grandchchildren, Harrison and Molly; three step-grandchildren, Jennifer, Stephanie, and April; seven step-great-grandchildren, Dominick, Lacey, Ella, Charleigh, Elizabeth, Madaline, and Annabeth.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Alois, Jr. “Bub, and Jim Sosinsky, and three sisters, Dorothy Rott, Elaine Reidle, and Margaret Kosa.

A Celebration of Life gathering for Herbert “Herb” Sosinsky was held Thursday, July 31, 2014 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Generations Funeral Home in Tomahawk.  A graveside service will take place in Hillsboro, WI, at Mount Vernon Cemetery.  Generations Funeral Home & Crematory is in charge of arrangements.  Leave online condolences and share photos at generationsfuneral.com.  Memorials may be given in Herb’s name to the Lincoln County Humane Society and the Tomahawk Food Pantry.
