Kathleen J. Russell, age 93 of South Wayne, passed away Tuesday, July 3, 2018 at Monroe Clinic Hospital in Monroe. She was born Feb. 7, 1925 in New Diggings Township in Lafayette County, the daughter of William and Hettie (Hornbeck) Olson. Kathleen was united in marriage to Francis E. “Frank” Russell on March 11, 1944 at Lancaster Methodist Church Parsonage in Lancaster. Kathleen lived in Cuba City until moving to Gratiot in 1967 and retired to South Wayne in 1990. She was a cook for several years at both the Roost in rural Shullsburg and Gratiot Hotel. She also worked at MicroSwitch in Warren, Ill., for 20 years.
Kathleen is survived by her children: Frances Kay Caley of Belvedere, Ill., Betty Lou Jones, Karen Lynn Russell, and Joan Marie Russell all of Monroe, Dorothy Ann (Ivan) Seffrood of South Wayne, Jacquelyn Sue Burmeister of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Barbara Jean Laundrie of Fennimore, and Keith William (Joyce) Russell of Arlington, Wash.; 17 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; 9 great-great grandchildren; one brother: Bernard Olson of Woodburn, Ore., and two sisters: Ila Jean Billips of Dekalb, Ill., and Carol Martin of Onalaska. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Frank in 1976; one son: James Everette Russell in 1968; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; three brothers: Lyle and Clarence and Robert Olson; and two sisters: Helen Krepfle and Melvina Thormann.
Kathleen was a former member of the South Wayne United Methodist Church. She was also a proud member of South Wayne Women’s Club, Lafayette County Homemakers and the VFW Auxiliary. Kathleen enjoyed cooking, sewing, and playing cards. She was a voracious reader of all genres of books. Kathleen cherished her family and the memories they created together. She will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by her family and friends.
A funeral service was held Friday, July 6, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Our Saviors Lutheran Church (407 E. Center Street, South Wayne, Wis., 53587) where Rev. Dennis Perger officiated. Burial was in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Cuba City. A visitation was held Friday, July 6, 2018 from 9:00 a.m. until the time of services at the church. The Erickson Funeral Home in Darlington is serving the family.
