Libbie Frances Sterba, 103, passed away on July, 30, 2013 at the home of her daughter in La Crosse.

She was born July 10, 1910 to Frank and Mildred Matousek in Chicago, IL and was the second of 8 children. Shortly after she was born the family moved to Kendall/Hillsboro area. On June 20, 1928 she married George W. Sterba of the rural Hillsboro area where they chose a peaceful valley to build their farm and raise two children.

Libbie was an excellent seamstress, cook, and nature lover. She had a good eye for spotting the many birds and wildlife that inhabited their valley.

Libbie had two children, Orlo Sterba of Munster, IN, and Olga Hoesley of La Crosse, WI, and a very special niece Jean Sterba who came to live and care for her after George’s passing. Two grandchildren, Martha Gordon of Highland, IN and Todd Hoesley of La Crosse, WI, and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, George; seven siblings and their spouses, Mildred and Oliver Novak, Olga and Robert Sterba, Frank and Mae Matousek, Milton and Gloria Matousek, Victor and Ellen Matousek, Georgiana and Willard Brandt, Carl and Modesta Matousek; sister in law and brother in law, Dora and Louie Smith; daughter in law, Elizabeth Sterba, and son in law, Henry Hoesley.

The family would like to thank Gundersen Health System Hospice staff for the wonderful care and compassion given over the past few weeks.

A celebration of life will be held Saturday, August 10, 2013 at 11 a.m. with a visitation starting at 10 a.m. at Picha Funeral Home located at 908 Prairie Ave in Hillsboro, WI.
