Marie Hess, 86, passed away Aug. 1 at Zilber Hospice, Wauwatosa, after a lengthy struggle with Alzheimer’s disease and respiratory illnesses.
She was born Oct. 13, 1930 in Milwaukee, the daughter of Ardath and Gertrude Jentz. Her family moved to Platteville when she was in grade school. She grew up there and graduated from Platteville High School. She graduated from UW-Platteville with a teaching degree, and taught elementary school and special education in Milwaukee and Kenosha for over 30 years.
She married Paul Hess in Platteville in December 1955. They lived in Kenosha for their married life. They enjoyed many vacations together with friends and family at Lake Tomahawk and in Florida. Paul passed away Oct. 26, 2009.
Marie was an avid bowler earlier in life, and loved to play bridge, euchre, hearts, cribbage and other card games with friends and family. She loved to sing and play the ukulele in college. She often sang at weddings for friends when she was younger. She and Paul hosted family gatherings at holidays at their home in Kenosha. She was an excellent cook, always looking for good recipes to try.
Marie lived for the last five years at Harbour Village, Greendale, and most recently at Maple Ridge, Milwaukee.
Marie is survived by her sister-in-law, June Jentz, Janesville, and many nieces, nephews and great nephews and nieces. Her parents, niece Karen McGuire, and brother Paul Jentz died before her.
A visitation for Marie will be from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 13 at First United Methodist Church of West Allis, 7520 W. Lapham St., West Allis. The funeral will follow at 3:00 p.m. Entombment will be Monday, Aug. 14 at 10 a.m. at Sunset Ridge Memorial cemetery, Kenosha.
