Oscar Luther Vamstad, age 85 of Blanchardville died on Monday, Feb. 29, 2016 at his home surrounded by his family.  He was born on Oct. 24, 1930 on the family farm in York Township, Green County, Wisconsin to Oscar and Clara (Thompson) Vamstad.  He lived with his family on the family farm for his years growing up, and worked with them in running the farm.  He attended school in Blanchardville and graduated from the Blanchardville High School in 1948.  After graduating from high school he worked at the York Center cheese factory. He was married on Feb. 13, 1951 to Ruth Lageson in the Blanchardville Lutheran parsonage. They celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary just this year.  Shortly after getting married, he entered the US Army in February of 1951. He served in the US and in Europe in the 31st division and earned the rank of corporal. After leaving service he began carpentering and building homes, which he did all over southern Wisconsin. His family was his greatest love and interest. He attended all the events for his grandchildren that he could. He followed all Wisconsin and local sports, especially the games his grandchildren played in, always arriving early. He loved fishing, hunting, and traveling the world with Ruth. His cabin in Hayward was his greatest accomplishment, to build it and share it with his wife, children and grandchildren. He was a member of the Blanchardville Lutheran Church, and the Dobson-Johnson American Legion Post 142 in Blanchardville.
Oscar is survived by his wife, Ruth Vamstad of Blanchardville; one son, Stuart (Patricia) Vamstad of Darlington; three grandchildren, Michael (Miriam) Vamstad of Twentynine Palms, Calif., Brad (Jennie) Vamstad of Mineral Point, and Brian (Hillary) Vamstad of Decorah, Iowa; four great-grandchildren, Dahlia, Diego, Bryce and Thorin; one sister, Doris Hustad of New Glarus; sisters-in-law, a brother-in-law and nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents; a great-grandson, Eric Arthur Vamstad; and a brother Everette Vamstad.
A visitation for Oscar Vamstad will be held on Thursday evening, March 3, 2016 from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m., and on Friday, March 4, 2016 from 10:00 a.m. until the service to be held at 11:00 a.m. at the New Hope Lutheran Church in Blanchardville.  Rev. Bill White will officiate.  Burial will be in the Graceland Cemetery in Blanchardville at a later time.  The Saether Funeral Home in Blanchardville is assisting the family.  Online memories and condolences can be shared with the family at www.saetherfuneralhome.com.
