Shirley A. Deetz, age 78, of South Wayne, passed away on Sunday, January 3, 2016 at Meriter Hospital, after a long battle with lupus. She was born on March 14, 1937 in Moline, IL, the daughter of Clifford and Ruth (Jacobson) Johnson. Shirley attended Stewart & Hooppole grade schools and graduated from Annawan High School and Rockford College.
    Shirley and John Deetz were married on September 26, 1970 in Rockford, IL. They farmed in the South Wayne area. She served as a grade school teacher at Skulthrop, England for 1 year; at a Civilian Air Force Base. She also taught grade school in Rockford.
    Shirley was a confirmed member of St. Peters Evangelical Reformed Church in Genesco, IL. She enjoyed gardening, flowers, and loved and trained dogs.
She is survived by her husband, John Deetz, of South Wayne; brother, Lee Johnson of South Wayne.
    She is predeceased by her parents.
Funeral services will Thursday, January 7, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. at Shriner-Hager-Gohlke Funeral Home with Pastor Kevin Cernek officiating. Burial will be in the Eastman Cemetery in South Wayne.
    Visitation will be Thursday, from 11:00 a.m. until time of service at 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
    A memorial fund is being established in Shirley’s memory for the Lupus foundation.
