Cuba City Jr. G erupts for a career-high 34 points in win over Spring Valley

Cuba City junior point guard Brady Olson scored a career-high 34 points in a last Thursday's semifinal victory over Spring Valley, then added 11 points and five rebounds in Friday's championship victory over Richland Center at the Cuba City Christmas Classic.

Brady Olson, Jr., G, Cuba City boys basketball

     Junior point guard Brady Olson went off for a career-high 34 points to lift the Cubans over the Spring Valley Cardinals, 70–49, in the opening game of the Cuba City Christmas Classic on Thursday, Dec. 27. Olson shot 12 of 17 from the field, including a 5-of-7 effort from 3-point range, and he finished 5 for 6 from the foul line during his career day. He also led the team with seven rebounds and four steals.

     Olson scored 11 points apiece and grabbed five rebounds in Friday's title game against the Richland Center Hornets to help the Cubans (6–2) capture the tournament title for the first time since 2015.

Remington Bontreger, So., 106, Lancaster wrestling

     Bontreger wit 5–1 and finished second at 106 pounds at last weekend’s two-day, 69-team Bi-State Classic. After a bye, and four straight pins, Bontreger (18–1) suffered his only loss of the season in his championship match to Stoughtoen’s Nicolas Rivera. He scored a team-high 42 team points to help the Flying Arrows (165.5 points) to a second-place finish out of 20 teams in Division 3.

Cole Crubel, Jr., G, River Ridge boys basketball

     River Ridge’s newest member of the 1,000-point club scored 20 points in a 64–50 victory over Albany, then 22 more in a 48–45 win over Iowa–Grant to help the Timberwolves (4–4) win the River Ridge Holiday Classic last Saturday.

 

Drew Hennessey, Sr., 220, Iowa–Grant/Highland wrestling

     Hennessey went 7–1 and finished third at 220-pounds at the two-day Bi-State Classic in La Crosse last weekend. Hennessey (21–1) suffered his first loss of the season in the quarterfinals, but rebounded with three straight pins to finish third.

Tony Leibfried, Jr., 285, Cuba City/Benton/Southwestern wrestling

     Leibfried wrestled to a fourth-place finish in the 285-pound weight class at last weekend’s 37th-annual Bi-State Classic. Leibfried (17–2) posted a 5–2 mark at the two-day, 69-team event.

 

Will Schaefer, Jr., 195, Belmont/Platteville wrestling

     Schaefer went 6–2 and placed fourth at 195 pounds last Saturday at the 37th-annual Bi-State Classic. Schaefer improved to 20–3 on the season after the two-day, 69-team event.
