FOOTBALL: Beginning of prep football practice, Tuesday, Aug. 2

     Football season is right around the corner, must to the delight of Americans everywhere. Prep football teams throughout the area have completed team camps in recent weeks, but official team practices can begin Tuesday, Aug. 2, the earliest allowed day of practice by the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association.

     Teams throughout the state will put on the pads and strap on the helmets next week in preparation for this year’s upcoming season. Teams will hold intrasquad scrimmages this weekend, before squaring of in sanctioned scrimmages against other schools on Aug. 12 and 13.

     The regular season will kickoff on Friday, Aug. 19 with a number of games in the area, as well as the Six Rivers Jamboree at UW–Platteville’s Pioneer Stadium on Saturday, Aug. 20.

 

YOUTH BASKETBALL: Steve Randall Youth Basketball Camp, Friday, July 29 (UW–Platteville), 9 a.m.–noon

     UW–Platteville will host the 12th annual Steve Randall Basketball Camp at Williams Fieldhouse. The free one-day camp filled up within hours of opening registration. Steve Randall, the former boys basketball head coach at Iowa–Grant and later Oshkosh West, passed away after a medical mistake during a routine angioplasty surgery in the fall of 2004. The camp was the brainchild of University of Wisconsin head coach Greg Gard, who played under Randall on Iowa–Grant’s 1989 state tournament team alongside Randall’s son, Lance. Lance Randall is now a head coach at Division 2 Lindenwood University in Saint Charles, Mo. 

 

SUMMER SWIMMING: 

     The Platteville Summer Swim team will close out its season Saturday at home when it hosts the annual Tom Caccia Invitational at 9 a.m. at the Platteville Family Aquatic Center. There are 89 swimmers, ages 6-18 on Platteville’s team this summer.
