First-place IowaGrant will travel to Southwestern Tuesday for a key SWAL softball matchup with the second-place Wildcats.

GAME OF THE WEEK (April 27–May 3)

PREP SOFTBALL: Iowa–Grant (9–1, 7–0 SWAL) at Southwestern (10–3, 6–1 SWAL), Tuesday, May 2, 5 p.m.

     The showdown for first-place in the Southwestern Wisconsin Activities League was
“snowed” out this afternoon and will be played Tuesday at 5 p.m. The first-place Panthers’ nine-game winning streak came to an end Monday with a 3–1 non-conference loss at Belmont. But coach Deanna Fulton’s squad and take a commanding two-game lead over the Wildcats with a win on Tuesday. I–G won the first meeting between the two schools 7–2 on April 3. Senior shortstop Hannah Sevens went 2-for-4 with a homer and two RBIs, while junior Kate Olson went 2-for-3 and drove in a run. Iowa–Grant senior Maranda McCarthy (9–1) stuck out seven and allowed just two runs on six hits. Southwestern’s Mya Runde allowed seven hits and eight walks in the first meeting, but was also let down by five Wildcat errors.

     Platteville (4–3, 2–2 SWC) at Dodgeville (6–5, 3–2 SWC), Tuesday, May 2, 5 p.m.

     The Hillmen are smarting. Platteville lost all-conference junior first baseman Kaycie Wagner to an season-ending shoulder surgery last week, then suffered a 2–1 loss to Prairie du Chien last Thursday and an 11–6 decision to league-leading River Valley on Tuesday. If Platteville has any shot to chase down the Blackhawks for a share of this year’s conference title, it must start with a win over the second-place Dodgers on Friday.

 

Southwestern (10–3) at Belmont (11–0), Friday, April 28, 5 p.m.

     The Six Rivers West-leading Braves will put their perfect record on the line Friday evening against the visiting Southwestern. Sophomore Sadie Willborn pitched the Braves to a 3–1 non-conference victory over SWAL-leading Iowa–Grant on Tuesday.

 

River Ridge/Cassville (7–5, 4–2 SRC) at Highland (6–5, 4–2 SRC), Monday, May 1, 5 p.m.

     The Cardinals will host the Timberwolves with second-place in the Six Rivers West on the line.

 

 

PREP BASEBBALL: Darlington (5–4, 5–1 SWAL) at Fennimore (11–0, 6–0 SWAL), Tuesday, May 2, 4:30 p.m.

     The undefeated Golden Eagles, ranked fourth in the Division 3, will face the second-place Redbirds Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. Mast Water Technology SWnews4U.com Athlete of the Week Trevor Neuroth and his Fennimore teammates can take a two-game lead in the conference standings with a win. Darlington senior Jesse Strutz’s and the Redbirds aim to force a first-place tie.

    Prairie du Chien (8–1, 3–0 SWC) at Platteville (8–5, 1–2 SWC), Friday, April 28, 5 p.m.

     The Hillmen are riding a four-game winnings steak after junior Garret Heer’s three-hit shutout in a 1–0 victory over Richland Center on Tuesday. Platteville will look to keep it going Friday when SWC-leading Prairie du Chien comes to town. The Blackhawks are tied for first with River Valley (8–3, 3–0). Prairie du Chien will host River Valley on Tuesday.

     Lancaster (5–2, 1–1 SWC) at River Valley (6–2, 2–0 SWC), Tuesday, April 25, 5 p.m.

     The third-place Flying Arrows get a chance to knock of one of the two SWC powerhouses Tuesday afternoon.

 

Pecatonica (10–0, 6–0 SRC, #1 in Division 4) at Shullsburg/Benton (7–2, 5–1 SRC, #7 in D4), Friday, April 28, 4:30 p.m.

     Highland snapped Shullsburg/Benton’s seven-game losing streak and handed the Miner/Zephyrs their first conference loss of the season. The Shullsburg co-op will look to start a new streak Friday when it takes on undefeated Pecatonica, the top-ranked team in Division 4. The Vikings swept Highland last Friday 10–5 and 17–11.  

 

 

TRACK & FIELD:

River Ridge Invitational, Friday, April 28, 3 p.m.

     The biggest track meet of the week will be held Friday at River Ridge High School in Patch Grove. The Timberwolves will host 11-teams for its annual River Ridge Invitational. Participating teams include; Belmont, Cassville, De Soto, Dodgeville/Mineral Point, Fennimore, North Crawford, Platteville, Prairie du Chien, Seneca, Wauzeka–Steuben and the host Timberwolves.

 

 

PREP GOLF: River Valley House on the Rock Invitational, Saturday, April 29, 9 a.m.

     The Blackhawks will host the 20-team House on the Rock Invitational Saturday morning at The Spring House on the Rock Resort near Spring Green. Participating teams include: Argyle/Pecatonica, Barneveld, Cuba City, Darlington, Dodgeville, Fort Atkinson, Iowa–Grant, Kohler, Lancaster, Mineral Point, Platteville, Portage, Prairie du Chien, Richland Center, Sauk Prairie, Southwestern, Viroqua, Westby, Wisconsin Heights and the host Blackhawks.
