Chieftains score sixth in the seventh to rally for 14–12 win in Six Rivers crossover game

PREP BASEBALL: Potosi 14, Argyle 12

ARGYLE — The Potosi/Cassville baseball team rallied from an early 10–4 hole to defeat host Argyle 14–12 in a wild Six Rivers Conference crossover game last Thursday afternoon.

Junior second baseman Owen Vogelsberg hit an inside-the-park grand slam in the top of the fifth inning, to pull the Chieftains within striking distance at 10–8, the the Potosi/Cassville co-op erupted for six runs in the top of the seventh to grab the lead.

Vogelsberg was hit by a pitch to lead off  Potosi/Cassville's game-winning rally in the seventh. After a Tucker Leibfried fielder's choice ground out, Ethan Kerkhoff and starting pitcher sophomore Sam Udelhofen hit back-to-back singles to load the bases.

Leibfried scored on a passed ball, then junior shortstop Robby Roe then sliced two-run triple to right field to tie the game at 11–11. Roe also led of the game with a homer.

Junior third basemen Ashton Spitzack's ensuing RBI bunt single gave the Chieftains' their first lead of the game since 1–0 in the top of the first inning.

Senior catcher Levi Hampton was hit by a pitch, before senior first baseman Jack Kaiser's RBI ground out drove in another run, and sophomore centerfielder Preston Steiner singled back up the middle to make it 14–11.

Argyle got a run back in the bottom of the seventh when Ritschard was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, stole second and scored on a ground out, but Kerkhoff struck out Godfrey — the potential tying-run, to end the game and earn his first career save.

Senior Jared Wunderlin (1–0), who came on in relief in the bottom of the fifth inning, earned the win, allowing one run on two hits and one walk while striking out four in his two innings of work.

Roe (2x3, 3 RBI), Kaiser (2x5, 2 RBI) and Steiner (2x3, 2 RBI) each finished the game with multiple hits and multiple RBI for the Chieftains improved to 3–2 with the win, but are now 4–6 on the season and 1–2 in the Six Rivers West after going 1–4 in its last five games since last Thursday's wild win at Argyle.
