BLANCHARDVILLE — Potosi/Cassville senior guard Mykaylia Bauer put the Chieftains on her shoulders and led her team to a 44–43 victory in the 2021–22 season opener at Pecatonica last Monday night.

Bauer scored the Chieftains final 11 points over the final six minutes to rally Potosi/Cassville from a six-point deficit to a one-point win.

Potosi/Cassville (1–0) trailed 39–33 when Bauer hit a 3-pointer, then stole the ball on the ensuing Pec possession and converted a 3-point play on the other end to tie the game.

The host Vikings (2–1) scored the next four points and led 49–39 with just under two minutes left in the game.

Bauer answered with another 3-pointer to make it a one-point game. She stole the ball with 17 seconds left and was fouled on a layup attempt on the breakaway.

Bauer made both free throws with 13 seconds remaining to account for the final score.

Pecatonica did not get off a final shot as a pass was deflected from the ball handler and recovered by Bauer to end the game.

Bauer finished the game with a team-high 13 points, six assists, five of her team’s 25 steals and four rebounds. Junior point guard Emily Bierman added 11 points and three steals for the winners.

Potosi/Cassville dominated the first half 25–18 and held it until the Vikings used a big run in the middle of the second half to build its own six-point lead, which was aided in large part due to the Chieftains’ 35 turnovers on the night.

“It was nice to see the girls compete and find a way to win after having a nice lead in the early part of the second half and then falling behind,” said Potosi/Cassville head coach Brad Bierman. “We hit a wall with our conditioning in the second half and were completely out of gas. We had an extremely high number of turnovers which is not that uncommon for a first game but we need to improve significantly in that area and our rebounding needs to be much better. This is a good group of girls that will keep working and improving.”
