Dye lifts Hillmen with last-second game-winning layups in first two games

BARNEVELD — Sophomore forward Rianna Dye and the Platteville Hillmen are off to a thrilling start 4–0.

Dye won Platteville's first two games — non-conference road affairs at Barneveld and Mineral Point — two week's ago with a pair of last-second game-winning shots in both.

Dye hits a left-handed layup off a pass from sophomore point guard Avery Richard at the buzzer to beat Barneveld 51–50 in last Tuesday’s season-opener for both teams. Dye finished with 12 points and seven rebounds, while Richard scored a team-high 14 points, to go with six assists, three rebounds and two steals in the win. Senior Jaxcyn Berntgen added nine points and nine boards.

Two nights later, Dye and Richard did it again, teaming up for the game-winning layup with 1.1 left in a 51–49 win at Mineral Point.

Platteville rallied from a 49–46 deficit with 1:09 left to play after forcing a defensive five-second call and a game-tying 3-pointer from Claire Huser from the right wing with 53.6 seconds left.

Dye blocked Bree Swenson’s layup attempt with 26 seconds left, then Hillmen coach Brandon Temperly called a timeout with 9.8 seconds left to setup the final play.

Richard drove the middle of the lane, flipped a nifty pass over a pair of Pointers to Dye on the left block, who made the game-winning layup.

After a timeout, Richard tipped the end line inbound pass near halfcourt and the Pointers were unable to get a final shot off in time.

Dye finished with seven points and a whopping 19 rebounds, Richard had a team-high 16 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists, and Berntgen chipped in 14 points for the Hillmen (2–0), who hosted New Glarus Tuesday night. Platteville will then host perennial power La Crosse Aquinas Tuesday, Dec. 3.
