A finish amongst the stars
WISCONSIN DELLS – Southwest Wisconsin was well represented at this year’s Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association boys’ and girls’ All-Star games held last Wednesday and Thursday at JustAGame Field House in Wisconsin Dells.
Featuring the state’s best graduated senior basketball players from all five divisions, the WBCA All-Star games also sere as a fundraiser for the Midwest Athletes Against Childhood Cancer, Inc. (MACC Fund), which the WBCA has contributed over $3 million to since 1978.
While the girls’ all-star games were played on Wednesday, June 28, the boys’ games were played on Thursday, June 29.
Area girls playing on the Division 5 South All-Star squad were Pecatonica’s Chloe Schraepfer, Potosi/Cassville’s Emily Bierman, and Kennedy Howell and Tori Nodolf, both of Belmont. Among the coaches for the D5 South squad were Kaleene McGettigan of Belmont, Michael Flanagan of Black Hawk and Timothy Kosharek of Highland.
Despite building a 40–24 halftime lead, the D5 South squad wound up on the short end of a 75–68 final after being outscored, 51–28, in the second half.
While Jayla Nagel of Kickapoo and Kat Miller of Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah led the South squad with 10 points each, Schraepfer added four, while Bierman, Howell and Nodolf each finished with two.
Despite the loss, the highlight of the All-Star Games was the D5 South teams fund-raising efforts. The Division 5 South team raised the most amount of money from all 10 girls All-Star teams with $57,598 for the MACC Fund.
Potosi/Cassville’s Bierman, who was featured in The Platteville Journal two weeks ago for her fundraising effort in the name of cousin Sydney Fecht, who is battling brain cancer, was the overall top player fundraiser, collecting $37,111.
Belmont’s McGettigan was the top coach fundraiser with $2,375.
In the Division 4 girls all-star game, area athletes playing for the D4 South squad included Katelyn Cox and Kennedy Wenger, both of Mineral Point, and Lainee Burks of Lancaster. The coaches for the D4 South squad were Michael Keyes and Mike Chamber of Mineral Point, along with Kevin Everson of Fennimore.
In a back-and-forth game, the South squad prevailed with a score of 53–51.
Jorey Buwalda of Randolph led the South squad with 15 points, while Wenger chipped in four and Burks had two.
Area girls playing in the South squad in the Division 3 girls all-star game included Ashlyn Knapp of Prairie du Chien, Camryn Nies of Platteville and Charlotte Ferstl of River Valley.
While the North pulled off a 73-69 victory, Nies scored eight points, Knapp five and Ferstl two for the South.
Of the five girls’ games played last Wednesday, the North All-Stars were victorious in three.
Thursday’s action kicked off with the Division 5 boys’ all-star game, where southwest Wisconsin was represented on the D5 Red team by Southwestern’s Anthony Martin, Seneca’s Evan Payne, Benton’s Rex Blaine, Barneveld’s Ryan Gust, Potosi’s Sam Udelhofen and Wauzeka-Steuben’s Seth Bunders.
The D5 Red All-Stars put on a show, making 15 3-pointers on their way to a 136–110 victory over the White all-stars.
Leading the Red all-stars with 18 points was Cullen Rauls of Fall River, while Bunders chipped in 16, followed by Udelhofen and Blaine each with 14. Martin finished with 11, while Payne added nine and Gust had six.
In the following game, Southwest Wisconsin was well represented on both Division 4 squads, as River Ridge’s Braden Crubel, Fennimore’s Brady Larson, Mineral Point’s Luke Kisgen and Cuba City’s Max Lucey suited up for the D4 White team, while Darlington’s Carver Fitzsimons took the court for the D4 Red squad.
After holding a 48–43 halftime lead, the White squad outscored the Red all-stars, 75-58, in the second half, claiming a decisive 123-101 victory.
Leading the White all-stars with 17 points was Kodi Miller of Onalaska Luther, while Lucey chipped in 10, Kisgen nine, Larson eight and Crubel four.
Fitzsimons netted 11 points for the Red all-stars, who was led by Dawson Schmidt of Shiocton, who finished with 16 points.
In the Division 3 boys’ all-star game, Dodgeville’s Chandler Batchelor scored 14 points for the White team, who suffered a 113-92 loss to the Red squad.
