OSHKOSH — The state’s top senior football players got together last Friday and Saturday to play in the annual Wisconsin Football Coaches Association All-Star Classic held at Titan Stadium on the campus of UW–Oshkosh.
Serving as a fundraiser for the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, the 220 coaches and players from this year’s games raised more than $380,000. Since the first all-star game held in 2006, more than $5.3 million has been raised.
Last Friday night, the Eight-Player All-Star game was played, where four members of the Belmont Braves competed for the South All-Star squad.
Representing Belmont were Konner Lancaster (WR/DB), Kolby Lancaster (QB/LB), Noah Fritz (TE/LB) and Casin Carey (OL/DE).
In a lopsided 74–12 win by the North, the South finished with a negative 103 yards rushing on 36 attempts, while completing 17-of-29 passing attempts for 246 yards. Finishing with 143 yards of total offense on 65 plays, the South saw the North accumulate 343 yards of total offense on just 32 plays.
After holding a halftime lead of 38–12, the North outscored the South, 36-0, in the second half, scoring on pass plays of 15 and 21 yards, and run plays of 13, 38 and 62 yards.
Scoring their only two touchdowns in the second quarter, the South first got an 88-yard TD pass from Evan Pedretti of De Soto, to Sam Marquardt of Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas. Pedretti later scored in the same quarter on a one-yard TD run to cap off a five-play, 73-yard scoring drive.
Kolby Lancaster concluded the game completing 4-of-9 passing attempts for 25 yards.
Noah Fritz had two receptions for 16 yards, negative 13 yards on three rushing attempts and one assisted tackle, while Konner Lancaster had two receptions for nine yards to go along with one solo tackle on defense.
Saturday’s festivities kicked off with the Small School All-Star game, featuring players from Divisions 4–7.
Representing the southwest corner of the state were: Braden Crubel (WR) and Anthony Davis (DE) of River Ridge, Joey Xiya (K) of Prairie du Chien, Max McGuire (LG) and Barrett Vieth (RG) of Darlington, Lucas Milz (ILB) of Black Hawk/Warren, Nate Lawrence (DB) of Benton/Scales Mound/Shullsburg) and Brendan Lynch (OLB) of Mineral Point. Among those on the Small School South coaching staff were Mike Aide of Highland and Cory Milz of Black Hawk/Warren.
A big second quarter saw the North score three touchdowns, giving them a 28-6 halftime lead that they later turned into a 44-12 victory over the South.
The biggest difference between the two squads came on the ground, where the North rushed for 256 yards and four touchdowns on 49 attempts, compared to the South who rushed for negative eight yards and one score on 23 attempts.
The South’s two scores came on an 11-yard TD run by John Perugini of Racine St. Catherine’s to cap off a six-play, 37-yard scoring drive in the second quarter, and on a five-yard TD pass from Perugini to Gabe Egan of Cedar Grove-Belgium, which capped off a 14-play, 66-yard scoring drive in the third quarter.
While the North squad finished with 324 yards of total offense on 68 plays, the South finished with 77 yards on 49 offensive plays.
Offensively for the South squad, Crubel did not have a reception or rushing attempt, as the South finished with 85 yards passing on 12-of-26 passing attempts. Crubel did have one solo tackle though.
Defensively for the South, Lucas Milz led the team in tackles with three solo and six assisted, while Brendan Lynch had two solo stops and four assisted. Nate Lawrence was in on one assisted tackle.
Not having any local athletes playing in the Large School All-Star game, which features players in Divisions 1-3, the North completed the sweep with a convincing 49-7 victory over the South.
In the three games combined, the North outscored the South, 167-31.
