WISCONSIN RAPIDS — Saturday was a memorable experience for Hillsboro freshman Annie Haas.

Haas ran a season-best time of 20:43.69 to finish 32nd out of 150 runners in the WIAA Division 3 girls state cross country championships.

“Saturday was a great ending to our season,” said Hillsboro head coach Ben Leis. “Annie ran her fastest time of the year and was able to beat some girls she had not beat all year. She started the race hard, fell a few spots but did an incredible job of keeping it all together mentally, holding her spot and then catching her second wind around the two-mile mark and making one last surge.”

Haas became the first freshman in school history to run in the state meet.

“It was very impressive for a freshman that has never really experienced a race atmosphere like that before,” said Leis. “We didn’t go to Platteville this year and at River Valley Annie took like ninth, but found herself in no mans land during that race. Annie ran a great race on Saturday.”

Haas won the individual Scenic Bluffs Conference championship meet two weeks ago and finished seventh overall with a time of 20:15.6 at last week’s WIAA D 3 Westby Sectional.

She will undoubtedly be the Tigers' leader next fall.

Marion sophomore Delaney Greene was the D3 individual state champion Saturday with a time of 19:05.43, more than six seconds better than runner-up Jennifer Lichter of La Crosse Aquinas.

Oshkosh Lourdes won the girls’ team title for a second straight year with 68 points. Westby finished second with 90.
