Tigers riding high into regional play
Boys winning streak reaches seven games

SENECA — The Hillsboro Tigers finished the regular season on a seven-game winning streak after holding off Seneca 48–43 in a non-conference boys’ basketball game Saturday night.

Sophomore Max Stockwell scored a team-high 18 points, which including a 9 of 13 performance at the free throw line, and grabbed five rebounds to offset a 23-point, six 3-point performance from Seneca sophomore Kilian Boland.

Fellow sophomore Joey Helgerson scored 10 points to aid the Tigers’ comeback victory.

Hillsboro (18–4) rallied from a 38–34 deficit on the strength of a 14–5 closing run.

Last Friday, senior guard Brandon Stanek scored a game-high 24 points on an efficient 8 of 12 shooting night to lead the Tigers to a 61–55 victory over visiting Royall.

Stanek also cashed in 8 of 10 free throw attempts, grabbed nine rebounds and made three steals in the victory.

Hillsboro took control of the game with a 17–9 second quarter burst and held on throughout the second half.

Stockwell added 16 points and eight rebounds as the Tigers finished second in the Scenic Bluffs at 11–3.

Bangor (17–5, 14–0) wrapped up a perfect conference championship season with a 62–59 victory over Necedah on Friday night.

Last Tuesday, Hillsboro hammered winless Wonewoc–Center 75–43.

The Tigers raced out to a 21–4 first-quarter lead and never trailed.

Senior Matt Anderson scored a game-high 14 points on 7 of 9 shooting and grabbed five rebounds to lead Hillsboro’s balanced attack.

Helgerson added 13 points. Stanek and senior Brock Borchardt chipped in nine points apiece.

Hillsboro opened WIAA Division 5 regional play this past Tuesday with a home game against seventh-seeded Cashton (4–16). With a win the Tigers will host either No. 3 seed La Farge (17–3) or No. 6 Weston (4–16).
