OSHKOSH — Mark Sullivan’s Hillsboro volleyball team went 5–4 and placed ninth out of 18 teams at last week’s University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Khaos Tournament.

The Tigers dropped pool play matches to Seymour 25–19, 18–25, 19–25, Bayport 25–15, 20–25, 10–15 and West Bend West 13–25, 16–25, and defeated Port Washington 25–20, 26–24 and Waukesha North 25–23, 25–23 to finish fourth in Pool B on Tuesday.

With a fourth-place finish in pool play Hillsboro was relegated to the Silver bracket Wednesday with a chance to play for seventh place.

The Tigers opened bracket play with a quarterfinal victory over Ripon 25–16, 25–14, before a 12–25, 23–25 loss to West Bend West put Hillsboro in the consolation side of the Silver bracket.

Sullivan’s Tigers bounced back with victories over Houghton, Mich. 25–23, 25–19 and a rematch win over Ripon 25–8, 25–15 in the ninth-place match.

Senior middle hitter Sami Levy led the team in kills and blocks to earn a spot on the 18-player All-Tournament team.

Complete Hillsboro stats were not available at press time.

The Tigers (5–4) will return to action Thursday when they host New Lisbon in the Scenic Bluffs Conference opener for both teams.

Hillsboro has won three straight league titles and advanced to the WIAA Division 4 state tournament each of the last two years and seven times in the past decade.

The Tigers return four key players from last year’s 37–12 squad, including Levy, senior setter/outsider hitter Kelsey Skala, sophomore setter/outsider hitter Mackenzie Sullivan and sophomore middle hitter Tasha Mitchell.
