#7 Shullsburg/Benton runs winning streak to seven

SHULLSBURG/BENTON head coach Tim Strang (center) picked up his 250th career victory on the baseball diamond when the Miner-Zephyrs rallied to defeat River Ridge, 9-2, in a Six Rivers West game last Tuesday.

    SHULLSBURG – The #7-ranked Shullsburg/Benton baseball team ran its winning streak to seven games after rolling over River Ridge and Potosi at home in Six Rivers West baseball action.
    The Miner-Zephyrs (7-1 overall, 5-0 SRC) scored eight unanswered runs in their final three at-bats to rally from an early 2-1 deficit to sink the visiting Timberwolves, 9-2 at Badger Park on Tuesday, April 18, and then used a nine-run rally in the bottom of the first inning to erase an early 1-0 deficit en route to a 13-1 win over the Chieftains back at home on Monday, April 24.
    Senior Chris Trejo went 3-for-4 with a double and four runs driven in to lead Shulls-Ben in Tuesday’s come-from-behind win over the Timberwolves, which earned head coach Tim Strang his 250th career coaching victory in 24 seasons with the program.
    Trejo also worked the first four innings on the mound, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks with six strikeouts. Nathan Mowry (3-1) tossed three scoreless innings in relief giving up one hit with four Ks to earn the win.
    Nolan Strang was 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI and a run scored, while Jacob Berendes and Hunter Matye each went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a RBI. Berendes also doubled for the hosts.
    Senior Nathan Wedige led the Miner-Zephyrs in Monday’s game, going 2-for-2 with a double, five RBI and two runs scored in the win.
    Nick Wagner also went 2-for-2 with a double and two runs scored, while Mowry had a double with two RBI and a run. Strang scored twice and drove in a run, and Brook Tiedeman crossed the plate three times.
    Shulls-Ben sent 13 batters to the plate during their nine-run first-inning outburst, including seven straight batters who reached base after two were down. Wedige had a two-run single and scored twice in the first frame. Mowry bashed a RBI-double, and Strang and Berendes hit back-to-back RBI-singles.
    Wedige added a three-run double in the second inning to put the hosts up 13-1.
    Berendes (1-0) picked up the win on the hill, working three and two-thirds innings and allowing a run on three hits with six walks and six strikeouts. Matye fired one and a third hitless innings with four Ks.  
    Shullsburg/Benton will be busy over the next week. The Miner-Zephyrs have a Six Rivers crossover doubleheader at #1-ranked Pecatonica on Friday, April 28, beginning at 4:30 p.m. Then, they will have SRW games at Cassville on Monday, May 1, and at home against Belmont on Tuesday, May 2. Both those game are set to start at 5 p.m.
    Finally, on Wednesday, May 3, the Shulls/Ben co-op will head to Clinton (Iowa) to meet Warren/Stockton in a non-conference game at Ashford University Field, which is home of the Clinton Lumberkings minor league baseball team.
