BLOOMINGTON — Jon Bahr’s big night was a big boost for Belmont on Friday night.
The do-it-all senior ran for 125 yards and three touchdowns, threw for 158 yards and two touchdowns, and intercepted two passes on defense to lead the visiting Braves to a 44–18 Six Rivers Conference victory over River Ridge Friday night.
"The boys played a very good football game," said Belmont head coach Jason Weittenhiller. "We moved the ball both on the ground and through the air. The offensive line played a great game. They were making large holes and gave Jon plenty of time to throw the ball."
Bahr got the Braves (2–1, 2–1 Six Rivers) rolling on the ground, running for a pair of 6-yard scores and adding a 37-yard sprint to send his team out to a 19–6 lead with 1:16 to play in the first quarter.
Senior Quinn Cushman got into the scoring act in the second quarter, catching a 26-yard TD pass from Bahr midway through the stanza and running to paydirt from 12 yards out with 25 seconds remaining in the half to put the Braves ahead 31–12 at the intermission.
The Timberwolves (0–3, 0–3) scored on a 12-yard run by Brett Moravits in the first quarter and an 85-yard jaunt by Preston Clark in the second quarter.
Bahr hooked up with sophomore Isaac Wiegel on an 18-yard scoring strike in the third quarter; and then, after a 6-yard TD reception by Clark cut the score to 37–18, Wiegel added a 57-yard TD run in the fourth quarter to seal the victory for the Braves.
All told, Belmont rolled up 520 yards of offense on the night after rushing for 351 yards and passing for another 169 yards.
Senior Nate Knebel gained 118 yards on 16 carries, while Cushman ran for 68 yards on two carries with a TD and hauled in six passes for 91 yards and another score.
Wiegel toted the ball six times for 30 yards a TD and had one catch for 18 yards and a TD. Senior Lane Kamps added two catches for 54 yards for the Braves.
Belmont (2–1, 2–1 Six Rivers) will travel to Blanchardville Friday to face undefeated Pecatonica/Argyle (3–0, 2–0 SRC).
"Pec/Argyle is playing very good football right now," added Weittenhiller. "We will need to show up ready to play ball."
